Pizzeria Da Nella Cucina Napoletana | Chicago

Service: This was the most impeccable dining experience I’ve had in a while. Our charming server was very experienced and knowledgable, and he timed our courses perfectly. The owner Frank chatted with us for a while, introduced me to his wife Nella—a Campania native and second generation chef—and even added more wood to the brick oven just for my photograph. We also received complimentary Orangecello after diner!

Booze: Full bar, nice wines and a long list of craft Italian beers.

Food:

Contadina | panna, mushrooms, parmigiano, black truffle, sausage, fresh walnuts. tasting portion $ 10

Fiori di Zucca | zucchini blossoms stuffed with prosciutto and smoked mozzarella $ 10.99

Cafone | white pizza, smoked mozzarella, sauted onions, sausage, speck $ 14.99

Florentina | white pizza, mozzarella, spinach, ricotta, shaved parmigiano $ 12.99

Tiramisu | layers of mascarpone and ladyfingers delicately soaked in espresso $ 6.99

There are no crazy, innovative ingredients here; simple, fresh, authentic Neapolitan flavors are married with the perfect dough and wood-fired. The crust is thin, yet soft and chewy, not cracker-like. It’s texture is consistent throughout—unlike some similar pies that go limp due to a soggy center. Toppings are evenly dispersed, edges slightly burnt. Decadent and creamy, the risotto loaded with earthy mushrooms and black truffle was fucking fantastic. I normally have to season dishes like this myself with extra salt and pepper, but not this time. The stuffed zucchini blossoms, served with a light tomato sauce, were doughy and delicious. Although we already ordered plenty of food, tiramisu is obligatory in my book after an excellent Italian meal. Little chocolate chips added a bit of unexpected [but welcomed] texture to the smoothness of mascarpone and espresso-soaked ladyfingers. Not the best I’ve ever had, but quite enjoyable none the less!

Kudos: The secluded outdoor seating area with beautiful foliage, including their very own lemon tree, is perfect for a relaxing lunch or romantic dinner.

Overall: Magnifico.
